Radiotherapy of Prostate Cancer
In collaboration with Dr. Vijayakumar and other members of our department, Leon C. Myrianthopoulos, Ph.D. carried out a study which showed that treatment techniques could be ranked consistently, and irrespective of patient, as far as minimizing the irradiated volume of the penile structures of patients undergoing external radiotherapy for prostate cancer is concerned. The 6-field technique, currently in use at our center, was found to be the best of those compared for achieving this objective, for equal doses being delivered to the targeted prostate volume by each technique. This advantage of the 6-field technique is most likely being reflected in the difference in potency preservation outcomes for comparable groups of prostate cancer patients who were treated with different techniques in our clinic. A relevant paper has been accepted for publication in the British Journal of Radiology.
