Clinical Radiation Oncology
The Department of Radiation and Cellular Oncology has a total of 13 attending staff and 4 attendings with joint appointments. The majority of the medical staff run clinical services at one of the five affiliated hospitals. Several also have laboratories (Drs. Weichselbaum, Chung, Halpern, Heimann, Mansur). Many concentrate on specific disease sites (e.g., gynecology or pediatrics). Others practice general radiotherapy.
Research interests of the faculty are quite diverse. The faculty have presented at a number of important national and international meetings, including the American Society of Therapeutic Radiotherapy and Oncology (ASTRO), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the American Radium Society (ARS) and have published in all the major oncology journals. Faculty are involved in numerous in-house protocols in adult and pediatric patients. Examples include concomitant chemotherapy and altered fractionation radiotherapy in head and neck cancer, stereotactic radiosurgery and concomitant chemoradiotherapy in advanced gynecologic malignancies. The University is an active member of many national cooperative oncology groups including RTOG, CALGB, SWOG, CCSG and the GOG.
